Once they were on an equal footing, now Kickers Offenbach and Eintracht Frankfurt separate (soccer) worlds. In the DFB Cup, they have one thing in common, which is not particularly encouraging – from Offenbach’s point of view, the reason is exactly 50 years ago.
Offenbach – Five clubs failed as defending champions in the first round of the DFB Cup, which was held for the first time in 1935: Hamburger SV (1963; 1: 1, 1: 2 against Fürth), OFC (1970; 0: 2 in Heilbronn), the SV Werder Bremen (1994; 1: 2 with the amateurs of FC Bayern Munich), 1. FC Kaiserslautern (1996; 0: 1 in Fürth) and Eintracht (2018; 1: 2 in Ulm).
Kickers Offenbach: Frustrating defeat after winning the cup
The Kickers deservedly won the cup final against the favored 1. FC Köln in Hanover in August 1970 with 2: 1, but then failed in the European Cup winners despite good performances at Club Bruges (2: 1, 0: 2). In the Bundesliga they only got off to a moderate start as promoted players. In the first round of the DFB Cup they did not play until December at the regional league team VfR Heilbronn, losing 2-0 (0-0) under coach Rudi Gutendorf in front of 15,000 spectators. Griesbeck (51.) and Mayer (89.) met against the constrained Offenbacher. The weekend before, the Kickers had forced 1. FC Köln 4-1 in the Bundesliga.

Volz, Erwin Spinnler, Niko Semlitsch, Egon Schmitt, Hans Reich, Roland Weida, Winfried Schäfer (67th Georg Biechle), Klaus Winkler, Erwin Kremers (54th Heinz Schönberger), Gerhard Kraft and Horst Gecks played for the Kickers. There were seven players in the starting line-up who had lifted the DFB Cup in August.
Like the OFC: almost 48 years later, Eintracht Frankfurt messes up against Ulm
Almost 48 years later Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt failed at Offenbach’s league rivals SSV Ulm in the Danube Stadium, which was filled with 18,400 fans (1: 2). Referee Gerach had denied two Frankfurt goals because of offside, today’s Schalke Goncalo Paciencia scored the next goal in the 90th minute. The surprise was perfect and much bigger than 50 years ago at Aus der Kickers in Heilbronn.
Karl-Heinz Volz, the hero of the Kickers in the 1970 DFB Cup final with a saved penalty, agrees: “There was only one league between Heilbronn and us. Heilbronn was a regional league team, which is almost the second division today. There were already a few guys there who were really good at kicking. ”In March 1970, the later promoted from Offenbach had won the regional league game in Heilbronn 2-0.
