oekostrom AG: Money decides the climate crisis – Adam Pawloff on “Friday in the arena”

Vienna (OTS) Adam Pawloff is a climate and finance expert at Greenpeace Austria. This Friday he is a guest at “Friday in the arena“, The podcast and video format of oekostrom AG. In a talk with oekostrom AG board member Ulrich Streibl and moderator Tom Rottenberg, he talks about why the European Central Bank (ECB) favors sectors that are harmful to the climate and how money flows can be redirected sustainably.

“Greenpeace is always looking for the big levers for change – the financial market is one of them”, so Pawloff. According to the Paris Climate Agreement, global warming can only be limited to 1.5 degrees if global financial flows are diverted: Both public and private investments must support the implementation of the agreed climate targets. According to Adam Pawloff, this is exactly where a major problem lies: “The ECB currently holds around 280 billion euros in corporate bonds. Around 65% of this comes from either fossil energy companies, car companies, airlines or energy-intensive production. Thus, the ECB massively favors these sectors over other, more environmentally sustainable – that has to change!”

Pawloff’s “Tip on Friday”:I own a share in most of the Austrian listed companies. I don’t have insane voting rights, but I won the right to ask questions at the general meeting. That’s something anyone can do: get a share to be an activist shareholder. “
