Odette and Alpha. Find out how to choose the names of the storms that hit Portugal

According to the Institute, the phenomenon was assessed in conjunction with the National Hurricane Center in the USA, “having chosen to name the cyclone” “Alpha”. Since 1953, tropical Atlantic storms have been named after lists drawn up by the National Hurricane Center. They are currently maintained and updated by an international committee of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

They all have names already defined by the National Hurricane Center, which follow each other in alphabetical order. The lists alternate male and female names and are different for each region. The first lists only contained female names, but there were many protests that this type of disaster was associated only with women. Thus, from 1979 onwards, male names also began to be introduced, alternating with female names.

The hurricane and storm season in the Atlantic has already gone by the names Arlene, Bret, Cindy, Don, Emily, Franklin, Gert and Harvey until it reached Irma, Jose and Katia.

In Europe there are also two lists made by the meteorological services of two groups from seven countries: Portugal, Spain, France and Belgium on the one hand and the United Kingdom, Holland and Ireland on the other. The name attributed to the catastrophe always leaves the table of the group that is reached in the first place by the natural phenomenon.

The lists are organized in alphabetical order by three meteorological services: Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera, Aemet and Météo-France. Names change between male and female.
