(Graphic: Odenwald district) Odenwald job exchange on 13 September in Erbach
The number of people registered as unemployed in the Odenwald district rose by 194 to 2,700 in August. Compared to the same month last year, however, 513 more people are registered as unemployed.
Looking at the two areas of law separately, there was an increase of 90 to 1,703 people compared to the previous month in the responsibility of the municipal job center (SGB II). In August, 997 people were registered as unemployed in the area of responsibility of the Erbach Employment Agency. This is an increase of 104 people compared to the previous month. A year ago, only 800 unemployed were registered here. In August, the municipal job center looked after 2,405 benefit communities (eight fewer than in July). The number of people in benefit communities fell by 44 to 5,287 compared to the previous month. Compared to the same month last year, however, a clear increase of 186 is visible.
Largest increase among women registered as unemployed
The largest increase was among women who were registered as unemployed, their number rose by 131 to 1,342. The number of unemployed people over the age of 50 has also increased. Here it was 93 more than in the previous month (861 in total). There was a further increase in unemployed fellow citizens without a German passport, with the number of registered persons rising by 69 to 1,199. The number of young adults between the ages of 15 and 24 registered as unemployed increased by 66 to 386.
Last month, 556 job vacancies were reported in the Odenwald district, which corresponds to an increase of 0.4 percent compared to the previous month and a decrease of 8.4 percent compared to the previous year. The registered jobs are distributed among the first three areas with 123 in the production engineering occupations, followed by transport and logistics occupations with 72 and manufacturing occupations with 71 positions.
Slight increase in registered jobs
The small increase in reported jobs makes it clear that the weak economy is also having an impact on the labor market in the Odenwald district. Due to seasonal reasons, there is a regular increase in unemployment in August – this is due to the end of school and many apprenticeships. Accordingly, in the summer months, more and more young people who have not been taken on or who are bridging the gap until they go to university report. In addition, there are vacation times in the companies, which means that decisions about filling vacancies are only made later. However, the unusually high increase is due to the entry of former Rowenta employees into the phase of unemployment. Unfortunately, many of the former employees have not yet been able to find a new job within the one-year transition period within the framework of a rescue company.
With an unemployment rate of 5.2 percent, the Odenwald district is still below the Hessian rate of 5.4 percent. In the southern Hessian comparison, it is in fourth place behind Bergstrasse with a rate of 4.4 percent. This is followed by the district of Darmstadt-Dieburg with 5.0 percent and the district of Offenbach with 5.1 percent. The district of Groß-Gerau is still at the bottom with 6.2 percent.
