Navigating Dementia: A Support Course for Caregivers
Facing the challenges of dementia can be overwhelming for families. A new course in Harderwijk, Netherlands, offers invaluable support and practical skills for partners, children, and other informal caregivers of individuals living with dementia. The program, “Dealing with your loved one’s dementia,” provides a comprehensive understanding of the disease and equips participants with the tools they need to navigate this difficult journey.
The course is structured in four informative sessions, each designed to address key aspects of dementia care. “The course consists of four parts,” explains christel Ruesen,owner of Houvast bij Dementie,who leads the program.
- Understanding Dementia: Participants gain a foundational understanding of dementia, its progression, and its impact on the individual.
- Self-Esteem and Environment: This section emphasizes the importance of maintaining self-esteem and self-direction in individuals with dementia, and how the environment plays a crucial role.
- Interaction and Behavior: The course addresses effective communication strategies and how to interpret and respond to changing communication patterns and behaviors.
- Self-Care and Support: this crucial segment focuses on the well-being of the caregiver, offering guidance on seeking help and accessing support resources.
Each session lasts 1.5 hours and is held on Friday mornings at the Odensehuis Harderwijk, located in De Aanleg meeting center on Albert Verweyplein.Upcoming course dates include January 17th and 24th, February 14th and 21st, and March 14th and 21st, and April 11th and 18th, all from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The course is limited to a maximum of 10 participants to ensure personalized attention. A separate, supervised program is available for loved ones with dementia who require additional care.
