This is very sad news. Willis Reed, legendary Knicks insider, has died aged 80. He will remain in the eyes of all one of the first “winners” of a mediatised NBA. Rest in peace, Captain.
One of those who never wanted to abandon his ship. The « Captain » Knicks trapped against Wilt Chamberlain’s Lakers. Announced injured for Game 7 of the 1970 NBA Finals, Willis Reed had finally held his place. 27 minutes of play for 4 points and 3 rebounds. A thin statistical line, oh so insignificant when placed next to its impact. A monster of envy and defense, the Captain limited Wilt Chamberlain to “only” 21 points. Without him, it was a waste of time. The story is very well told to you right HERE. What will we remember of Willis Reed? That in 2021 he was one of « 75 Greatest » highlighted by the NBA. He at least will have become aware of his heritage and the recognition shown by the new generations. His career averages are not necessarily those of a Hall of Famer – 18.7 points and 12.9 rebounds in 650 games – but all the decor accompanied him on the stage of the Naismith Memorial in Springfield. Double NBA champion in 70 and 73 (MVP of the two editions of Finals), MVP of the regular season in 70, seven-time All-Star, Rookie of the year in 65. A trophy cabinet in line with all the storytelling to dig up. A figure of New York basketball, Willis Reed has accomplished too much to be forgotten. His name will remain among those of the greats of our sport. Thank you Captain.
