October’s Astonishing Astronomical Spectacles: Don’t Miss the Draconid Meteor Shower!

This month of October, nature will give us several astronomical spectacles which, without a doubt, you should not miss.

As autumn progresses in the northern hemisphere of the planet, the skies become increasingly clearer because the weather allows it, so you can go outside to enjoy, especially at night, the stars and other cosmic events. like the solar eclipse we will see next week.

And also in October, nature will give us a meteor shower, which is popularly known like rain of the Draconids, whose main characteristic is that up to 600 meteorites can be seen per hour.

According to experts on the subject, the Draconid shower occurs because the Earth passes through the orbit of comet 21P/Gicobini-Zinner.

When to see the Draconid shower in October

The meteor shower will occur between October 6 and 10 and can be seen in the constellation Draco.

Peak rainfall activity is expected to occur between October 8 and 9. During the first part of the night, the Moon will not have risen above the horizon, so observation of the draconids can be carried out in good conditions at the moment when its radiant reaches its highest point.

Being a modest meteor shower, it must be taken into account that you must observe them at a point where there is no light pollution.

“The observation location can be anywhere as long as it provides a dark sky. It is preferable to observe from a place that has few obstacles to the view (such as buildings, trees or mountains), and not use optical instruments that limit our field of vision,” they explain from the National Geographic Institute of Spain.

The Draconids can be observed from any point in the northern hemisphere, with a frequency of 20 meteors/hour and a speed of 20 kilometers/second. Despite this, It has been estimated that the moment of maximum activity will be around 8 p.m. (ET) on Sunday, October 8.
