October 9th: Vienna Schools Day

Invitation to all Viennese schools to visit

On Vienna Schools Day, more than 700 schools in Vienna are open to visitors. This special day is taking place for the fourteenth time this year. “Vienna Schools Day offers future students, parents, grandparents and everyone who is interested in Vienna schools an excellent opportunity to get a personal impression. “Schools all over Vienna show themselves in their everyday practice and with their pedagogical objectives,” says Arno Langmeier, interim education director. All of Vienna’s approximately 700 schools can be visited during school hours.

Many schools also use the day as an “open day” and present their priorities and activities. The teachers are happy to talk to their students about their school in personal conversations and answer questions.

Anyone who would like to take a virtual tour of a school can do so at around 360 schools through the “Vienna digitally open school doors”. In short videos, the schools provide an insight into school life and offer support in the decision-making process about further education. The videos are on the Education Directorate’s platform to find.

Vice Mayor and City Councilor for Education Christoph Wiederkehr emphasizes: “On Vienna Schools Day, children and legal guardians can get a good impression of the different focuses and educational concepts at Viennese schools. I think it’s particularly great that innovative offers such as a virtual tour help everyone who is interested in Vienna’s schools get a better picture.”

Creative competition of the Viennese schools together with the districts

In the 2024/25 school year, all Viennese schools are invited to bring the legacy of school reformer Otto Glöckel to life by presenting their innovative school projects that have advanced or advanced education. The competition offers a unique opportunity, in collaboration with all 23 Vienna districts, to show the creative potential of our city. All projects can be submitted online until January 10, 2025:

Otto Glöckel anniversary year

Otto Glöckel modernized and democratized the Austrian school system after the First World War and his goal was to ensure that all children, regardless of social status or gender, received an optimal education. This vision led him to advocate for a comprehensive school that would teach all 10 to 14 year olds together. His reforms took place particularly in Vienna, where he served as president of the city school board. The Vienna school reform was considered a model for reform pedagogy in the interwar period and made a significant contribution to the modernization of the Austrian school system.
