A unique plane Supermarine Spitfire that our Air Force has at its disposal will today fly over the Thessaloniki parade for the anniversary of October 28.
Greece received the first Supermarine Spitfire Mk VB/VC from the British in late 1943 in the Middle East, initially supplying 335 Squadron and later 336. After extensive action in North Africa and Yugoslavia, the Greek Spitfires returned to Greece in October 1944. They were replaced by newer versions and from 1947, they were used for operational training at the Aviation School, until 1953 when they were retired.
The only Greek Spitfire
The Spitfire Mk IX with number MJ755 is the only Greek Spitfire in flyable condition today. The restoration of the plane was done for the Air Force with funding from the “Ikaros” Foundation, following the initiative and effort of Peter Livanos and the “Ikaros” Foundation.
“When you fly this plane you feel pride but also responsibility because it is the only one of its kind in the Air Force,” said the deputy commander to ERT3 Theodoros Tsalis.
