October 2023 Ring of Fire Solar Eclipse: Can it be seen in Indonesia?

Jakarta, CNNIndonesia

Sky phenomenon eclipse The sun “ring of fire” or ring of fire will greet October future. Can it be seen in Indonesia?

Views resembling the ring of fire or the phenomenon of a total solar eclipse, will be seen in eight states of the United States on October 14, 2023.

During the event, sky watchers in North, Central, and South America will see a partial solar eclipse that lasts about three hours, but the ring of fire is visible for only a few minutes.

An annular solar eclipse is different from a total solar eclipse, one of which will occur on April 8, 2024, in Mexico, the United States, and Canada.

“These are two completely different experiences,” said Jayne Aubele, Senior Research Fellow at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science.

“With a total solar eclipse, you don’t get darkness, colder temperatures, or the ‘black hole sun’ effect, but what you do get is an incredible ‘ring of fire,'” he added.

A total solar eclipse is the result of the Moon appearing to cross the Sun while it is slightly farther from Earth in its elliptical orbit.

During this eclipse, the Moon will cover up to 91 percent of the Sun, but not completely. So everyone needs to wear solar eclipse glasses if they want to see directly.

The U.S. area that will see the total solar eclipse in person begins in Oregon and spans Northern California, Nevada, Utah, northeastern Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Texas. It then moved across the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico, Belize, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Colombia and Brazil, according to reports from Live Science.

To see the “ring of fire”, for a maximum of 4 minutes 52 seconds in the US, observers must be within the “path of total eclipse” a radius of 201 to 220 kilometers.

“It’s important to know where you are on the other side of the pathway – being close to the center will give you a longer duration than if you are on the edge,” said Angela Speck, an astronomer at the University of Texas, citing Space.

If you want to see the phenomenon of the ring of fire solar eclipse but are in another part of the world, observers can also watch live streaming at the San Francisco Exploratorium and on the website following.

Indonesia will not be able to see the annular solar eclipse in October. The last phenomenon that could be seen in Indonesia this year was the hybrid solar eclipse last April.

A new solar eclipse will cross again in the Indonesian sky in the range of 2028 to 2042.

Bosscha Bandung observatory staff, Yatni Yulianti, said that the Indonesian people still had the opportunity to witness the phenomenon of a solar eclipse in that year.

He revealed that on July 22 2028, a partial solar eclipse will pass through Indonesia. Furthermore, on May 21, 2031, Indonesia will be passed by an annular solar eclipse and there are two areas in the country that this eclipse will pass, namely Kalimantan and Sulawesi.

Then only on April 20 2042, Indonesia will again ‘meet’ with a total solar eclipse. The eclipse will pass through Sumatra, a little bit in Kalimantan and then to the Philippines.

Yatni added that 2042 was an interesting year because there were two eclipses.

“October 14, 2042 an annular solar eclipse will cross Indonesia and pass through Kalimantan, Sulawesi and the islands in [kawasan] east. So 2042 will be a special and busy year for astronomers,” he said.
