October 17, world day for the rejection of poverty, a stele installed in Nantes

France has between 5 and 9 million poor people1 and more than 300,000 people are homeless, among 4.1 million French people who are poorly housed – figures which have been increasing since the 2000s.

Because everyone can, at some point in their life, encounter difficulties, the Nantes Collective for the Refusal of Poverty is committed to the fight against poverty. For its 10 years of mobilization, the collective proposed to the community to install a stele rejecting poverty in Nantes, in the Elisa Mercoeur square. This stele, a replica of the one installed at the Trocadéro, created by the integration association ATAO, will be symbolically unveiled on October 17, the world day for overcoming poverty. Strong in its commitment and its values, the City of Nantes supports the Nantes collective for the rejection of poverty in its commitment to fight against precariousness and this initiative.

Johanna Rolland, mayor of Nantes, and the Nantes Collective for the Refusal of Poverty invite you to the unveiling of this stele on the occasion of the World Day for the Refusal of Poverty. This day allows people directly affected by poverty to speak out about the shameful conditions they experience and their daily resistance on: Thursday October 17, 2024 from 5:30 p.m. at square Elisa Mercoeur, 44000 Nantes

In the presence of: Johanna Rolland, mayor of Nantes, representatives of the Nantes collective for the refusal of poverty and the associations Etmadouche, La Cloche, ATD Quart Monde, the social works of the fraternity, Eaux Vives Emmaüs and De l’ Shadow to Light.
A tribute will be paid to the victims of poverty with the “Au Clair de la Rue” Choir and “the little choir of the refusal of poverty”
