Without a doubt, each and every one of us has that special friend who is with us even in the worst moments. Today we have the perfect opportunity—or the pretext, some would say—to celebrate that friendship. In Mexico and other Latin American countries—especially in Argentina—the “best friend” is celebrated on this day. The above, at the initiative of the Argentine psychologist and philosopher Ernesto Febbraro, who proposed the date in 1958.
Febbraro had the idea of choosing this day because it was the same date as the Apollo 11 moon landing, a symbol of union and friendship between the peoples of the world. And there is nothing like unity and friendship to promote peace in the world. In addition to these reasons, there are many others to celebrate such an important value.
Epicurus, ancient Greek philosopher, considered friendship the most precious asset in achieving happiness and a good life. Friendship is a perfect antidote to loneliness and fear. Who has never unleashed fear on their friends? If you have any concern, just a couple of messages, sharing a coffee or a chat with that special person is enough to feel calmer.
But also, one learns to exercise and receive trust and loyalty in a friendship relationship. Unlike love, which requires frequency, friendship does not. At least that was the opinion of Jorge Luis Borges. We get to see our friends once a year and we know they will be there. All in all, it doesn’t hurt to send a message from time to time to cultivate a bond as important as friendship.
In the end, for Epicurus himself, friendship is so powerful that it gives us immortality. Just as you heard it, because in the end, when we face death, we remain alive in the memories of all our friends: that is true immortality.
