Lovers of underground horror and pixel art will know Octavo Navarro well, a Spanish creator who alternates his illustrations with his games. Its beautiful illustrations, of great beauty and detail (with numerous characters represented at the same time) contrast with its dark games for PC, such as The Super (cannibalism and restoration), The Librarian (sinister mysteries in the library) or The Chronicler (RPG of a girl against monsters), as well as her anthology Midnight Scenes, whose latest installment, From the Woods, is set in an asylum and came out earlier this year. Now Navarro has become even more known in the business thanks to his latest work in a famous magazine.
The Catalan artist has illustrated the cover of issue #390 of the veteran EDGE magazine on the occasion of its thirtieth anniversary. This is a special issue that brings together the hundred best games of all time and analyzed by the magazine’s editors throughout its thirty years. As seen in the illustration, it is a convention center where both current characters such as Stray’s cat and timeless icons such as Yoshi appear. However, what is important are the numerous details and references to games, sagas and consoles, many and varied, an exercise in recognition.
In 1993 the journey of this magazine began with the help of Steve Jarratt (an important journalist in the sector) and edited by the Future group. With a monthly circulation, its essence and origin is from Great Britain, but it also published editions in other countries. Spain also had its own edition and had two different stages between it, but neither was very successful.
I had the immense honor to illustrate EDGE’s cover for the magazine’s 30th anniversary. How cool is that?! @edgeonline pic.twitter.com/SQOXfFgFTX
