Occupational health and safety: the PLQ wants more time to study the reform

QUEBEC – The official opposition is asking the Legault government to postpone for three weeks the study of its reform of occupational health and safety standards.

The effects of Bill 59 must be better analyzed and the law must be thoroughly improved, according to what the Liberal Party (PLQ) supports in its request made on Tuesday.

Almost all unions, workers’ groups have harshly criticized the reform of Labor Minister Jean Boulet during the consultations. Even the directors of public health condemned it unanimously.

Consequently, the liberal labor spokesperson, Monsef Derraji, argues that parliamentarians must take the time necessary to analyze all the comments made by the groups in order to properly study the bill in parliamentary committee.

The unions have all criticized the bill for being sexist, because it classifies the health and education sectors as being at low risk of workplace injury _ sectors where the majority of the workforce he work is feminine and yet there are many complaints.

Bill 59 aims to reduce compensation costs. The CNESST paid benefits totaling $ 2.22 billion in 2018. It then accepted 103,406 occupational injuries and recorded 226 deaths. Every day, 251 workers suffer an accident.
