Experts have warned that teachers, hairdressers and nurses are at greater risk of developing varicose veins, a health condition that has been recorded as far back as Roman times.
These professions require standing for long periods, which makes people more susceptible to this painful condition.
Mark Bratby, a consultant radiologist, said: “The problem of varicose veins is not new. There are records of the condition in Roman times.”
He added: “We see a lot of hairdressers, nurses and teachers in the clinic. Standing on the feet for long periods of time leads to varicose veins.”
The NHS says: “Some research suggests that jobs that require standing for long periods may increase the risk of developing varicose veins. This is because blood does not flow as easily when you stand for long periods of time.”
Varicose veins are swollen, enlarged veins that usually occur in the legs and feet.
They can be blue or dark purple, and often appear lumpy, swollen, or twisted.
Sometimes they are painless, but other times they can be accompanied by:
Feeling of pain and heaviness in the legs. Swelling of the feet and ankles. A burning or throbbing sensation in the legs. Cramps in the leg muscles, especially at night. Dry and itchy skin.
Staying healthy, eating well, not eating too many highly processed foods, watching your weight and exercising as much as possible are all good things to reduce your risk of developing the condition.
