Ankara wants to immediately promote a Kurdish peace solution using imprisoned PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan as an interlocutor.
The first meeting of the two deputies of the pro-Kurdish party DEM, Pervin Buldan and Siri Sureya Oder, with Ocalan last Saturday was positive. The two MPs returned from the island of Imrali, where the PKK leader has been held since 1999, carrying a 7-point response from Ocalan in which he calls for strengthening the brotherhood of Kurds and Turks, not only “as a historical responsibility, but also as an urgent need”. .
It also calls for constructive initiatives to be taken by all political circles in the country and for the Turkish National Assembly to contribute to the process. The events in Syria and Gaza, he said, showed that the Kurdish solution cannot be postponed and he asked for the input and suggestions of the opposition for the success of the project.
During Saturday’s meeting, Ocalan instructed the two MPs who visited him to immediately start meetings with the parties in the Turkish parliament. Ahmet Turk, a prominent Kurdish veteran politician who was deposed a month ago as mayor of the city of Mardin, will probably participate in these meetings.
The two MPs stated that there will be a second meeting with Öcalan, but to a related question from journalists they answered that there is no set date yet for when Abdullah Öcalan will call on the PKK to lay down its arms. On behalf of the other parties, the first reaction came from the main opposition PLK.
Party chairman Ozgur Ozel said that from the beginning his party had argued that the solution platform should be the parliament. “We are in favor of the transparency of the process,” he said. DEM leaders underline the importance of parliament in the new process. “We are on the brink of a historic opportunity. It is time for courage and wisdom for a dignified peace,” they said. Devlet Bakhceli’s Nationalist Action Party said it sees Ocalan’s message positively, but will wait for its leader’s assessment, while an adviser to President Erdogan stated that Turkey’s century is the century of Turks and Kurds.
Competent analysts in Turkey believe that Syria is the main factor triggering Ocalan’s opening, which is “buying into” the Turkish state’s fear stemming from the US and Israel’s approach to the Kurds through this new dialogue. And they believe Ocalan wants to turn fear into a catalyst for a Kurdish solution.
