Obsidian’s RPG Avowed Undergoes Controversial Artistic Direction Change

At the Xbox Showcase, a trailer for the RPG Avowed was shown, which not only gave us a glimpse of the gameplay, but also confirmed the release of the action / RPG from Obsidian Entertainment in 2024. People, however, are more talking about his graphic style.

Immediately after the presentation, many noted that Avowed had undergone a graphical downgrade compared to what was shown in the past, where the game looked more realistic than at yesterday’s presentation. The differences were highlighted by comparing some of the images from the previous trailer with the new one: perhaps not a dim-grade in the strict sense, but rather a retexture meant to create the feel and atmosphere of other studio products such as Pillars of Eternity.

Whether this is a downgrade or indeed a change of scenery, in any case, several players were not satisfied with the changes made and expressed their dissatisfaction online. In any case, Obsidian acknowledged that the changes made to Avowed are a move to bring the game into line with the development style that the studio has always embraced in its work.

Obsidian RPGs shine in their world-building nature, expressive and deep stories, and quest design that knows how to reward players for exploration and experimentation. We wanted to make sure Avowed really respected those characteristics, we wanted to create something that felt like a real Obsidian RPG.

said director Carrie Patel.

And, most likely, the change in artistic direction also helped to achieve this.

What do you think of the changes made to the game? Do you consider the new style a downgrade, or do you like it better?
