Obsidian replaces large-scale action with 16th-century murder mysteries

Obsidian Entertainment is probably best known for its great role-playing games, with everything from Fallout: New Vegas, Pillars of Eternity and The Outer Worlds. Like when the developer rolled out Grounded in 2020, however, the team has taken a somewhat unexpected path this time, with a game called Pentiment.

All the choices you make in Pentiment have consequences.

As you can see in the trailer above, the developer has brought classic books and drawings to life, with a visual expression that oozes Johann Gutenberg and early letterpress art. It is all inspired by so-called illuminated manuscripts, with images set to text.

Via Xbox’s websites Obsidian tells us that Pentiment is a story-driven adventure set in Germany in the 16th century. Here we meet the artist Andreas Maler, who is involuntarily involved in a series of murders that are carried out over a period of 25 years.

The protagonist takes on the job of investigator, and must lead interrogations of both farmers and nobles in the pursuit of the truth. Along the way, one has to make a number of choices, which in turn have consequences for how the story develops.

Pentiment comes to PC, Xbox One and Xbox Series X / S, as well as Game Pass. Launch will be once in November this year.
