Observer reveals why electric trucks are difficult to sell in Indonesia

Jakarta

In recent years, the electrification market has grown rapidly in Indonesia. However, the vehicles presented are still residing in the motorcycle and passenger car segments. So why haven’t electric trucks been sold yet?

PT Krama Yudha Tiga Berlian Motors actually owns an electric truck called the Mitsubishi Fuso electric e-Center. However, these vehicles have only been exhibited and tested on the road, not yet sold to consumers in Indonesia.

This is a sign that, until now, there have been no mass-produced electric trucks in the country. According to Yannes Pasaribu, a senior automotive observer and product design expert at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), the cost of producing electric trucks is still quite expensive. That’s why transition and production aren’t as massive as electric cars.

“Large vehicles, especially for logistical needs, are not ready to switch to electrification in the near future, given the high price of the batteries as well as their fairly high weight. Therefore, they have not been able to reach an economic level in operation” , said Yannes, quoted on Saturday (23). / 9/2022).

Plus, Yannes explained, trucks need large batteries. This ultimately causes the manufacturer to demand higher production costs.

“So if for mobility a large truck requires a battery with a capacity of 400 KWh, for the battery alone it costs about Rp 960 million. Obviously not cheap,” he explained.

Aside from the price, another problem lies in the weight of the battery. According to him, electric trucks require large batteries with a weight that can reach 2 tons. Therefore, according to him, it is not ideal for commercial vehicles.

“Obviously it will reduce the carrying capacity of goods just because it continues to carry a very heavy battery,” he said.

Cited by Antara, the production number of commercial vehicles is only about 1% of the total population of 149.7 million motor vehicles in Indonesia. Therefore, the concentration of medium-term vehicle (BEV) battery development is strategically more suitable for motorcycles and electric cars with a larger population.
