Observer: NasDem’s appointment of Anies Baswedan becomes a political magnet

TIME.CO, Jakarta – Executive Director of Indonesia Political Review (IPR) Ujang Komarudin observes the political impact after the implementation of the NasDem party Anies Baswedan as a presidential candidate. According to Ujang, what NasDem did was in itself a political magnet so that many parties reacted, including coalition parties.

“The evidence is that many parties, including Jokowi’s coalition party, are on fire in the context that they don’t like what NasDem is doing,” Ujang told reporters. TimeTuesday 11 October 2022.

What NasDem did, Ujang said, was a party strategy that must have been carefully calculated, even considering the risk of being criticized, attacked or even wanting to degrade NasDem and Anies.

Ujang said there were two attitudes displayed by Jokowi’s ruling coalition party. Firstly, all parties are committed to guaranteeing Jokowi until October 2024. But secondly, when it comes to elections and presidential elections, all parties in the coalition will move independently.

“So I saw what NasDem did after (the presidential statement) there were no problems,” said the political observer of Al-Azhar University in Indonesia. Ujang is confident that NasDem general president Surya Paloh has obtained Jokowi’s permission. “It’s not possible that you don’t need a permit,” he said.

The presidential candidate, Ujang said, does not need to follow the government. What NasDem did, according to him, did not violate political ethics because no rules were violated. “There is no agreement to support each other between the coalition parties, not even as far as their respective coalitions are concerned,” Ujang said.

Earlier, PDIP Secretary General Hasto Kristiyanto highlighted: NasDem who declared Anies Baswedan as a presidential candidate. NasDem’s move as a ruling coalition party is considered by the PDIP to be incompatible with the expected political ethics because Anies is known to have different views from President Jokowi. The political ethics Hasto meant is that Jokowi’s party is obligated to encourage the success of government programs for the next five years.
