Observatory of Working Women: Analyzing Women’s Presence and Activity in the Work Environment

Mutua Universal, has participated in Malaga in the presentation of the sixth edition of the Observatory of Working Womena study carried out in collaboration with the People and Business Foundation that annually analyzes the presence and activity of women in various aspects of the work environment such as occupation, the wage gap or teleworking, among others.

The director of the People and Business Foundation, Bernabe Perez, was in charge of leading the conference, held with a large influx of public in the conference room of the Confederation of Employers of Malaga (CEM) and focused on the well-being of women at work. During his speech, Pérez stressed “the essential role of private companies in effective equality,” despite the fact that “the responsibility must also be shared by the people, who must do our bit.”

The act began with an inaugural table that had the institutional presence of the executive vice president of the Confederation of Businessmen of Malaga, Natalia Sanchez, which highlighted the “importance of training in equality and the visibility of professional women”; the director of the Andalusian Women’s Institute, Olga Carrion Mancebo, who underlined the “advances in real equality between men and women,” despite the fact that “issues such as reconciliation, which is of great concern to Andalusian women, and education” are still pending; the territorial delegate of Social Inclusion, Youth, Families and Equality of the Junta de Andalucía in Malaga, Ruth Sarabia; the Deputy Minister of Health and Consumption of the Junta de Andalucía Miguel Angel Guzman, who valued his experience as a manager in the Andalusian Health Service, “where 71% of the people employed are women and 47% of management positions are held by women”; and the president of the People and Companies Foundation and of Auren Consultores, Javier Quarry.

For his part, Laura Canton, territorial director of Mutua Universal in Andalusia, thanked “the opportunity provided by the Confederation of Businessmen of Malaga” to present this “report resulting from the collaboration agreement that we signed in 2017 with the People and Business Foundation.”

During the day, Susana Matodirector of Institutional Relations and CSR of Mutua Universal, presented the data at the national and Andalusian level of the VI edition of the Observatory of Working Women corresponding to the year 2022.

The study reflects that Andalusia is the Spanish autonomous community with the largest volume of national labor population, representing 18.22% of the total of Spain, a labor population distributed in 50% men and 50% women.

However, in Andalusia the active population of women is 7.6 points below that of men, while at the national level this difference is 5.4 points. Likewise, the employed population of women in Andalusia is 11 points below that of men, while in the national calculation this contrast is 7.2 points.

As regards the activity rate of women, Andalusia is 5.4 points below the national average (65.6% compared to 71%), with the province of Malaga representing the smallest difference between women and men (-6.7%), while Jaén is the one with the greatest women-men contrast (-15.7%).

Regarding employment, in Andalusia women have a higher part-time employment percentage than men (24.4% compared to 7.4%), 3 percentage points more than at the state level.

Regarding the unemployment rate for women in Andalusia, it is 7.5 points higher than the national average, which is 14.7%. The unemployment rate for men in the community is 5.1 points above the Spanish rate (11.4%).

Finally, it should be noted that in Andalusia the wage gap is 19.8%, and is 1.4 points below the national average, although it has evolved favorably in recent years.
