Today, on the 11th, we observed very heavy rain in northern Japan, and some areas were flooded due to sudden heavy rain. In addition, rain clouds are developing locally, and “tornado warning information” has been announced for Tochigi and Ibaraki prefectures. Please be aware of sudden changes in the weather, such as sudden heavy rain and lightning strikes tonight.

Localized heavy rains in northern Japan, flooding damage, warning of heavy rain disasters until night

Today, the 11th, the atmospheric conditions are very unstable in northern and eastern Japan due to the effects of warm, moist air and cold air above.

Rain clouds developed locally, mainly in Hokkaido and Tohoku, causing heavy rain in some places.
The maximum hourly rainfall observed by 3:30 p.m. was 55.5 mm in Noheji, Aomori Prefecture (renewed the highest value in observation history), and 38.0 mm in Asahikawa, Hokkaido. It rained torrential rains and heavy rains.

As of 3:30 p.m., heavy rain warnings have been issued for the Kamikawa, Ishikari, and Sorachi regions of Hokkaido.

It seems that there are areas where roads are flooded due to sudden heavy rain. It is quite dangerous to pass underpasses that are prone to flooding, so try to avoid routes as much as possible. There are also power outages due to lightning strikes.

In Hokkaido and Tohoku, watch out for localized heavy rain and thunderstorms through tonight, and be vigilant and cautious of flood damage and river flooding due to heavy rain.

Rain clouds developing here and there Be careful of sudden heavy rain, lightning strikes, tornadoes

Today, the 11th, there are many sunny places on the Pacific Ocean side, but rain clouds are developing here and there.

As of 3:30 pm, “tornado warning information” is being announced for Fukushima, Ibaraki, and Tochigi prefectures.
Rain clouds developed temporarily around the city center.

After this, not only in northern Japan, but also in eastern and western Japan, there is a risk of sudden, heavy rain, and gusts of lightning and tornadoes.
If there are signs of an approaching cumulonimbus cloud, such as darkening skies or the sound of thunder, move to a sturdy building as soon as possible to secure your safety. Be aware of sudden changes in weather.

A sign of a guerrilla downpour

There are three major phenomena that can be precursors to a guerrilla downpour (localized downpour).
① “A black cloud is approaching”
Developed cumulonimbus clouds that bring guerrilla downpours (locally heavy rains) appear pitch black. Black clouds that appear to be moving at high speed, or the sky suddenly turning dark despite the clear sky are also signs of guerrilla downpours (localized downpours).

② “I heard the sound of thunder.”
When you hear a rumbling sound, a thundercloud is approaching. Also, seeing lightning is one of the signs of guerrilla downpours (localized downpours).

③ A cold wind suddenly blew.
From the developed cumulonimbus clouds, cold wind blows down with raindrops. You also need to pay attention to changes in the wind.

If you feel any of these signs, evacuate to a safe place immediately. Also, when a thunder warning is issued or when the weather forecast says “unstable atmospheric conditions” or “sudden change in the weather”, there is a possibility of torrential downpours (locally heavy rain). Please note that there is
