Observation May Provide a New Diagnostic Tool for Diseases, Including Alzheimer’s

Observation may become a promising new method of diagnosing diseases.

Scientists at Washington University in St. Louis have found that bacteria in the gut can predict Alzheimer’s disease. The results of the work were published in the journal Science Translational Medicine.

Previous studies have shown that certain clusters of microorganisms occur in the gut of people with early signs of various diseases, at stages when it is still difficult to determine them. This observation may become a new promising method for diagnosing diseases.

Now experts have noticed that some types of bacteria can be found in the preclinical stage of dementia. In particular, Faecalibacterium prausnitzii (F. prausnitzii) is more common in the gut microbiome of people without dementia.

However, the authors also noticed the presence of other microorganisms in the body of those who began to develop Alzheimer’s disease, although these bacteria were previously considered beneficial to health.

It has not yet been possible to explain this relationship, however, it is possible that the whole thing is in the stage of the disease. So, not everyone who has signs of preclinical Alzheimer’s disease will develop Alzheimer’s disease itself in the future.

There may be changes in the gut microbiome (decrease in F. prausnitzii) that are characteristic of later stages of the disease.

In June 2023, a research team from around the world, including researchers from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (USA), proved that gut bacteria can help control plaque buildup in the arteries, preventing cardiovascular disease.
