Undoubtedly, one of the most popular “products” of the streaming giant “Netflix” is the series “The Crown” dedicated to the history of the British royal family – a gigantic epic that traces the course of the most popular family in the world, starting with marriage of Elizabeth II and Prince Philip. At the beginning of November, the series created by the British playwright Peter Morgan experienced its fifth season, and it seems that it has already managed to become the most controversial so far, as it allows the audience to relive the loudest scandals of the 90s of the last century, which surrounded the British royal house, in the center, of course, putting the marital crisis of Prince Charles and Diana Spencer.
This also became the first season of ‘The Crown’ to air following the death of Queen Elizabeth II on Sept. 8, and it’s not hard to draw parallels between the current royal family crisis and the troubled 1990s, when the actions of the current King Charles III, or later Prince Charles, became the reason for an avalanche of events that seriously undermined the respectful attitude of the British and even the rest of the world towards the monarchy. “The royal house of Windsor must become a unifier of the nation, demonstrating an example of an ideal family life,” says British Prime Minister John Major, played by Jonny Lee Miller, in the series. “Instead, the older generation of the royal family seems to have lost touch with reality, while the younger generation is behaving irresponsibly, conceited and completely confused.”
The fifth season of “The Crown” seemed to cause a storm of indignation even before the official release date, when the aforementioned John Major – the real one, not the one seen in the series – sounded the alarm. Namely, the writers of the series, in which the Prince of Wales Charles, played by Dominique West, describes himself as “a useless ornament thrown into the waiting room and gathering dust”, offer their fantasy of how Charles allegedly conspired with Major as early as the mid-1990s to get the queen to abdicate and finally become king. Understandably, the ex-President of the Council himself, through his representatives of the press, immediately hastened to passionately deny that such a conversation had ever taken place, and showered the producers of the series with all available insults.
