Permanent Council of the German Bishops’ Conference calls for vaccination

Würzburg / Trier – The Permanent Council of the German Bishops’ Conference, which met on November 22, 2021 in Würzburg, declares in view of the fourth wave of the corona pandemic:

“These days we are witnessing the progression of the fourth wave of the corona pandemic in almost unstoppable drama. The incidence figures, new infections and deaths are reaching alarming proportions.

We emphatically call on Catholics and all people in our country to be vaccinated as far as possible. In this pandemic, vaccination is an obligation of justice, solidarity and charity. From an ethical point of view, it is a moral duty. We have to protect ourselves and others. Vaccination is the most effective way of doing this. At the same time, we appeal to everyone to observe the necessary hygiene measures. We all want the freedoms in everyday life back as in the times before Corona. To do this, however, we have to work together – each and every one of us in this country. Because we see: Vaccination saves lives and less severe disease courses are achieved.

We adopt the appeal of Pope Francis who emphasized on World Health Day: ‘We are all called to fight the pandemic. Vaccines are an essential tool in this fight. Thanks to God and the work of many, we now have vaccines to protect ourselves from Covid-19. ‘ We add: Let’s take this opportunity! Please get vaccinated! “
