Germany relies on the 2G rule in the fight against Corona. Shops for daily needs are exempt from this – including hardware stores?

Berlin.
- The 2G rule now applies everywhere in Germany
- However, shops that offer everyday products are excluded
- Does that also count for the DIY stores from Obi, Hornbach and Co.?
During the first lockdown, many people used their free time to let off steam creatively within their own four walls. Many places have been renovated and beautified. But they were closed, at least temporarily. Politicians and retailers agree that this should not happen again. But in view of the current corona situation, Germany is relying on the 2G rule. Does it also apply in hardware store?

Corona rules: Does 2G also apply in hardware stores?
The decision on infection protection is currently the responsibility of the federal states. Although these have agreed with the federal government on the introduction of the 2G rule in retail agreed – how exactly this is designed can differ from federal state to federal state.
And so it is also different whether DIY stores are classified as shops for everyday needs or not. If this is the case, unvaccinated people can also shop there. If not, the 2G rule applies. According to the hardware store chain Bauhaus, this is currently the case in Saxony. In all other federal states, shopping is still possible for all customers.
Hardware stores could rely on stricter corona rules
It is conceivable, however, that hardware store chains decide to become active themselves and rely on stricter rules. One argument for this could be the protection of employees and customers. In addition, in some federal states, shopping is also possible without a mask – if the shop in question has the 2G rule is applicable. Apparently, the large German hardware store chains are not planning to introduce this on their own initiative.
Stricter rules in hardware stores: This is how Hornbach and Bauhaus say
There was a clear “no” to the unauthorized introduction of 2G in October Bauhaus – at least for now. “Bauhaus is not currently striving to use the 3G or 2G option as an additional access regulation for the nationwide specialist centers,” writes the company when asked. At the same time, however, one relies on compliance with local regulations and takes into account the regional infection process.
Also wants to go it alone with the Corona rules Hornbach waive. “Hornbach does not intend to introduce its own regulations that go beyond the applicable Corona regulations,” it said when asked. Rather, the large sales area is seen as a good prerequisite for keeping your distance.
How likely are stricter corona rules in the hardware store?
Other hardware store chains might think differently about the possibility of introducing stricter corona rules. However, it seems unlikely that companies will choose to bar potential customers from purchasing. Germany’s largest hardware store chain Obi left a corresponding request from our editorial team unanswered. (commercial vehicle)
