Radjak Hospital Salemba digestive surgeon specialist Dr Ponco Agus Prasojo SpB KBD MARS said obesity can increase a person’s risk of suffering from various diseases.
“Obesity is a condition of excess body fat which can have a serious impact on a person’s health,” said Ponco in his statement in Jakarta, Monday.
He explained some of the dangers of obesity on health, namely increasing the risk of heart disease, type two diabetes, sleep apnea, respiratory problems, joint problems, cancer, mental problems, metabolic and kidney disorders and various other diseases.
“Obesity increases the risk of heart disease such as coronary artery disease, stroke and high blood pressure. Excess fat in the body can interfere with blood flow and cause plaque buildup in the arteries,” he said.
Then, obesity also increases the main risk factor for type two diabetes. Extra fat can interfere with the cells’ ability to use insulin properly, thereby increasing blood sugar levels.
“Obesity can cause sleep apnea, which is a sleep disorder that causes breathing to stop during sleep. This can disrupt sleep patterns and increase the risk of other respiratory disorders,” said Dr. Ponco Agus Prasojo.
