Obesity Increases Risk of Colorectal Cancer: Epidemiological Studies

Epidemiological studies show that obesity increases the risk of colorectal cancer.

Colorectal cancer is the second most common cancer in Hong Kong and the second most lethal cancer. The March issue of the Department of Health’s “Non-infectious Diseases Direct Attack” pointed out that there were 2,270 deaths from colorectal cancer in Hong Kong in 2022, and in the ten years from 2012 to 2021, the number of new cases of the disease increased from 63.8 per 100,000 people. The number of cases rose to 79.6, and colorectal cancer cases in Hong Kong accounted for 15.3% of all new cancers in 2021. According to the Department of Health, studies have found that obese people have a 42% higher risk of colorectal cancer than those of normal weight. However, the obesity situation of Hong Kong people cannot be ignored (see picture). It is recommended that people aged 50 to 70 receive regular check-ups and maintain good living habits to reduce the risk of colorectal cancer. Risk of colorectal cancer.

The Department of Health pointed out that multiple epidemiological studies have shown that obesity increases the risk of colorectal cancer, and the risk of colorectal cancer is increased by 42% compared with those of normal weight (the risk of colon cancer and rectal cancer are increased by 53% and 20% respectively). Among colorectal cancer patients in Hong Kong, more than half of the colorectal cancer cases (51.3%) were at an advanced stage when diagnosed, that is, the cancer cells have spread to nearby lymph nodes (stage 3: 26.9%), or have further metastasized to other parts of the body (stage 4) :24.4%).

The Department of Health found in the 2020-2022 Population Health Survey that among non-institutionalized persons aged 15 to 84, more than 30% are obese, and more than 20% are overweight. If broken down by age, the 45 to 54-year-old group has the highest rate of obesity or overweight. The agency cited a South Korean study that followed more than 3.3 million people aged 20 to 49 and found that those with persistent obesity or central obesity increased their risk of early-onset colorectal cancer by 9% and 18% respectively, while those with persistent obesity and persistent central obesity increased their risk of early-onset colorectal cancer by 9% and 18% respectively. The risk of early-onset colorectal cancer is 19% higher. Therefore, Hong Kong people are advised to maintain good living habits, avoid obesity, and undergo regular check-ups.
