Spain is experiencing an increase in overweight and obesity, both in adults and children. This is evident from recent research by the National Center for Epidemiology and the Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition. The figures show a worrying situation.
From the facts of 2020 it appears that one in three children is too heavy between the ages of 2 and 17. More specifically, 10% of the children obesity and 2% severe obesity. There are clear differences between boys and girls. Overweight (34%) and obesity (13%) are much higher among boys than among girls (26% and 8% respectively).
The highest rates of overweight and obesity are seen among 6-9 year olds. Children from families where adults are overweight, are more likely to be overweight, while children from families with lower education and income are more likely to be overweight. The lowest figures for obesity are seen in Northern Spain.
Also with adults there is increasing obesity. 56% of adults are overweight, 19% are obese and 37% are overweight. Nearly 5% suffer from severe obesity. Just like children also applies to adults that men are more likely to be overweight and obese, while severe obesity is slightly higher in women.
Overweight and obesity increase with age, with a slight decline around 70-80 years. Inequalities in figures related to education level and income are most visible among women.
