Obesity Center Spaarne Gasthuis gets a new name – ‘Baria Netherlands must become the largest center of expertise in the Netherlands’ Baria Netherlands. That is the new name of the Obesity Center of the Spaarne Gasthuis. “We want to become the largest center of expertise in the Netherlands in the field of serious obesity. A new name is part of that ambition, ”says Sjoerd Bruin, surgeon at Baria Nederland. More than a million Dutch people are seriously overweight. The bariatric team of the Spaarne Gasthuis has helped some 10,000 people throughout the Netherlands in the past twelve years. They lost weight through gastric bypass surgery, which is how they take important steps towards better health. Bariatric surgeon Sjoerd Bruin explains: The patients we operate on are “the tip of the iceberg”. They are people who are tens of kilos overweight and have often made several attempts for years to lose weight themselves or with the help of a dietician or psychologist. Some of our patients lose weight well but always come back with a “bonus”. When they come to our center, it is usually a last attempt to still be able to achieve a healthy weight. ”
According to Bruin, extreme overweight also causes other conditions in most patients, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, sleep apnea, fatty liver disease and osteoarthritis. “Many diseases can also be prevented with an operation against serious obesity.”
Trust
Over the past two years, the team of specialists in the Spaarne Gasthuis has expanded enormously. Bruin: “Our multidisciplinary team consists of internists, psychologists, bariatric surgeons, dieticians, plastic surgeons, physiotherapists, nurse specialists and doctor’s assistants. The growth of the team requires its own name and identity. In this way we offer our patients a familiar environment, a place where they feel at ease. ” They recently started their own outpatient clinic with this team at the Amsterdam UMC and, together with the AMC, is conducting leading international scientific research into obesity. “With Baria Nederland we want to further use our expertise to create more awareness for the growing problem called obesity.”
STZ recognition
The care for patients with serious overweight in the Spaarne Gasthuis has been assessed as ‘top clinical care function’ by the Collaborative Top Clinical Training Hospitals [STZ]. This is a recognition for supra-regional, excellent care, research and training for the patient with serious obesity in the Spaarne Gasthuis. Bruin: “With this recognition, patients receive confirmation that they are at the right place at Baria Netherlands for the treatment and follow-up treatment of serious obesity. Our approach is aimed at the individual patient and all necessary care is brought under one roof. ”
