Obese people are more susceptible to COVID-19

Jakarta – Until vitamin D in the body apparently correlated with obesity. This was explained by the alumnus of Orthopedic and Traumatology Specialist, Faculty of Medicine, Airlangga University (Unair) Henry Suhendra.

Henry explains the link between vitamin D levels in the body and people who are obese. He also mentioned that obese people are more susceptible to COVID-19.

Why is that? Henry explained, people who are overweight have vitamin D content in the body of only 50 to 70 percent of those who are slender.

As reported by the Unair page, he explained that vitamin D, which should be fat-soluble, is actually more trapped in fat in people who are high in obesity. Therefore, vitamin D there is only a small amount left in the veins.

Through the YouTube channel Deddy Corbuzier Henry stated, “What can be used is vitamin D in the blood vessels, then it is brought to the organs. So the thicker a person’s fat is, the more vitamin D will be stored in fat and become useless.”

He also added that vitamin D is very good for muscle metabolism. Every time there is muscle damage, the vitamin is needed for repair. Hendra stated that protein alone was not enough.

Furthermore, to find out whether the level of vitamin D in the body is sufficient or not, it is necessary to control several other aspects. For example, calcium in the blood, calcium in the urine, as well as hormones secreted by the parathyroid.

In order to meet the needs of vitamin D in the body, there are several ways such as sunbathing or taking vitamin D supplements.

Henry recommends that people sunbathe from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. He said that the clocks were in accordance with the research results of a researcher from Boston who came to Indonesia in 2011 ago.

“The most optimal time for sunbathing, where the maximum Ultraviolet B level is obtained is not in the morning, but at 11 am to 1 pm,” he said.

Not only that, 85 percent of the body should be exposed to direct sunlight. The reason is, if it is blocked by clothes or something else, the body only gets ultraviolet A which does not form vitamin D.

Henry said that the duration of sunbathing is also influenced by skin type. Of the six skin types, the majority of the population of Southeast Asia is in the 4th and 5th positions.

“We, on average, need three to four times more drying than Caucasians to get it vitamin D the same one. It’s difficult, so we can replace it with supplements,” concluded the 1992 FK Unair alumnus.
