The Oberstadtstrasse has always had a special meaning for Baden. The development of the street is probably related to the former monastery and the monastery garden, writes the city of Baden. The road was later important as an access route to Oberstadt train station, which is no longer in operation.
However, the connection is still used a lot: thanks to the adjacent library, schools and the Oberstadt restaurant, it is even more important than before. In addition, Oberstadtstrasse represents an important and attractive connection for the Brunnmatt and Chrüzliberg districts to the city center.
However, the Oberstadtstrasse in the section Zürcherstrasse to Mellingerstrasse is getting old and has various damages as well as operational and design deficits. The current street space does not meet the requirements and needs in terms of condition, quality of stay, design, equality for people with disabilities and transformation area, writes the city council in the submission to the residents’ council. That’s why a road renovation is planned for 752,000 francs. The residents’ council will decide on the loan at its meeting in mid-October.
The Oberstadtstrasse area is served by the RVBW bus line. Buses must continue to cross. That is why the road will have a clearance width of 6 meters. The areas for pedestrian traffic are mostly 2.4 meters wide. At certain points it must be narrowed down to the Swiss standard width of 2 meters.
The junction with Mellingerstrasse will be greatly reduced. On the one hand, the crossing distance is reduced, so that a central island is no longer necessary. In addition, the side areas for pedestrian traffic will be enlarged
The introduction of a meeting zone was examined but not implemented. This would have resulted in a speed limit of 20 km/h on the road. However, the need to cross the road is considered to be too low, which is why the section should remain part of the 30 km/h zone. At least for now: Depending on the development of the entire district, the idea of reducing the pace can be taken up again.
The planned renovation also has an impact on the number of parking spaces: There are currently 14 short-term parking spaces. In order to ensure unsealing, greening and design, there will be five to eight parking spaces for private motorized transport in the future. The parking spaces are arranged lengthways on the side of the monastery.
Bus line 2 of the Regional Transport Company Baden-Wettingen (RVBW) continues to run via Oberstadtstrasse and Zürcherstrasse. Based on current knowledge, the RVBW does not intend to change this bus route.
If the loan is approved by the residents’ council, the building application should be submitted this December. Construction work is planned from May 2025 to summer 2026.
