All coaches, from the Bundesliga to the district league C, claim that the results are not important in the preparation. Above all, they bring this argument to the fore when the results are far from what they would like. Test matches served to prepare for the coming season: basic work, fitness, studying processes, understanding the game. And from the start of the championship, all of that matters less, from then on only the results count.

All of this is very reassuring, because the bare results of KFC Uerdingen are not. They would be alarming if they mattered. Because 0: 6 against the regional league team Preußen Münster and a 6: 3 victory against the district league team VfB Uerdingen are really not what gives the still large crowd of supporters confidence and the achievement of the proclaimed goal of the season – to be at the top – as very likely lets appear.

Coach Alexander Voigt does not leave the results cold, but classifies them. “6:3 – that’s obviously two goals too many,” he says. “We didn’t defend quite as consistently in the second half. But the third goal conceded from the halfway line, he doesn’t score that every year either.” After losing the ball, VfB’s Patrick Leenen saw that KFC goalkeeper Moritz Kosfeld was standing well in front of his box, pulled from the halfway line and hit the bull’s eye. The 30-year-old striker, nicknamed Pico, scored the goal of the day.

Moritz Kosfeld – who is that? Mika Rudnick stood between the posts at kick-off. The 19-year-old keeper, who was trained at 1. FC Kaiserslautern, comes from the third division team Viktoria Köln. And Kosfeld, who came on after an hour, belongs to the KFC U19s. “Because Robin Udegbe was ill last week and Timo Meißner wasn’t there either, Moritz helped us out in training all week. That’s why he deserved the effort,” explains the coach.

All in all, Voigt wasn’t all that dissatisfied with his team’s performance. “I was very happy with the first half,” he says. “That was a reasonable test despite heavy legs. Our goal at the moment is to develop step by step and to acquire the necessary level of fitness.” However, he is not naïve and is still hoping for additional staff. “When there is a change in preparation, there is often a gap. We saw that too. But we will also have to change during the season, so we can’t make ends meet with eleven or twelve men.” Voigt hopes that the club will be able to come to an agreement with one of the candidates in the next few days and sign the contract.

KFC has a completely new squad again, but also a two-week lead. Because while the season for the other upper leagues lasted until June and they are only now starting training again, the regional league relegated has been on the pitch for two weeks. After the training-free Sunday, a strenuous week is ahead. The team meets Blau-Gelb Überruhr on Wednesday at 7 p.m. on the circular route.
