The “Silberberg wind farm” is being built in the local recreation area in Ober-Ramstadt near Darmstadt. The system is due to go online soon.
Three gigantic rotor blades are already ready, other tower elements, which are to be installed in the coming week, are stored at the edge of the forest and part of a wind turbine is already in place: the “Silberberg wind farm” in Ober-Ramstadt is taking shape. The first of the two 135 meter high wind turbines should be completed in a week.
The systems are scheduled to go online this year. Ober-Ramstadt is the last of five locations in the Darmstadt-Dieburg district that, according to the renewable energies sub-plan, is at all suitable for the use of wind energy. The systems in Roßdorf, Groß-Umstadt, Modautal and Seeheim-Jugenheim have already been implemented.

The Silberberg location, which is located in one of the municipality’s most important local recreation areas, has already been under discussion since 2012, as Mayor Werner Schuchmann (SPD) said on Tuesday during an inspection of the construction site. Originally, three wind turbines were planned there.
As is so often the case, there was resistance from the citizenry. The Gegenwind initiative made people mobile. After the occurrence of red kites was proven, the operating company Energie Baden-Württemberg (EnBW) withdrew the application for one of three plants. The approval times are often “five times as long as prescribed by law,” complains Manfred Haberbrecher, Head of Business Development at EnBW.

In order to accelerate the approval processes, the state has now developed a nature conservation guide for the administrations, said State Secretary Jens Deutschendorf from the Hessian Ministry for Economic Affairs, Energy, Transport and Housing. “We need wind power in Hessen for the energy transition,” emphasized Deutschendorf. Unfortunately, the expansion of wind power almost came to a standstill in 2019. Now it is picking up speed again: Ten new systems with a total output of 30.2 megawatts were added in the first half of 2020.

In order to increase tolerance among the population, there should also be participation of the citizens in Ober-Ramstadt beyond the leasing of the urban land. After all, in purely mathematical terms, 5000 of the 7500 households in the core city could be supplied with climate-neutral electricity in the future, according to Schuchmann. The delay in approval also had advantages. As a result, more powerful systems with an output of 4.3 megawatts each and the latest technology would be installed. According to EnBW, the estimated CO2 savings are a total of 12,000 tons.
