RICHMOND, Virginia, USA (AP) – Former US President Barack Obama slammed Republican candidate for governor of Virginia Glenn Youngkin on Saturday, urging voters to support Democrat Terry McAuliffe in a closely watched race.
–
Obama accused Youngkin of presenting himself as a friendly, common man while encouraging what the former president called “lies and conspiracy theories” about a massive fraud in the 2020 presidential election. Former President Donald Trump continues to insist that there was a electoral fraud, an argument that fueled the January 6 attack on the United States Capitol.
–
“Either he really believes in the same conspiracy theories that sparked the mob, or he doesn’t but is willing to go with the flow, say or do whatever it takes to get elected. And maybe that’s worse … but that says a lot about his character, “Obama said.
–
Youngkin, a former private equity executive and first-time candidate, initially adopted “election integrity” as the lynchpin of his campaign and for months refused to say President Joe Biden was legitimately elected. He has since pointed out that Biden was, and that there was no massive fraud in last year’s presidential election.
