Oasis’ return revives CONTROVERSIAL interview with Noel Gallagher: “If I were to return I wouldn’t be announcing it on Mexican TV”

Fifteen years after a fight in Paris that became filled with mysticism over time, Oasis will definitely, perhaps, return to the stage. The Times and The Sunday Times, The Sun and several international media reported early Sunday morning news that fans of the Manchester-based group have been waiting for for more than a decade: the reconciliation of Noel and Liam Gallagher.

“Noel and Liam Gallagher appear to have resolved their differences and, if the truce holds, will play mass concerts in London and Manchester’s Heaton Park in 2025,” reads a lengthy column by Jonathan Dean.

Contrary to rumours that have surfaced in the past, Liam and Noel Gallagher have taken it upon themselves to fuel interest in the reunion by publishing messages with the tentative date and time of the expected announcement: 27.08.24 / 8 am.

In August 2009, a year after the release of the Dig Out Your Soul Tour, Oasis came to an abrupt end. Noel and Liam Gallagher had yet another argument before giving a concert at the Rock en Sein Festival. Unlike other altercations, there was no quick reconciliation and the eldest of the brothers made the decision to leave the band.

Liam Gallagher, driven by his ego, made the decision to go ahead with a watered-down version of Oasis, which he called Beady Eye.

By then, Oasis was the vestige of a musical style that had lost validity and originality 12 years earlier, when Blur and The Verve buried Britpop with the release of their albums Blur and Urban Hymns, considered a turning point and the last great album of the genre.

In 2012, two years after the split, Noel Gallagher had formed High Flying Birds, a group with which he released a self-titled album that was acclaimed by fans and critics, who defined it as musically more rounded than Oasis’ latest productions.

As part of his promotional tour in Mexico City, Noel gave an interview to Claudio Rodríguez, then presenter of Telehit, which is remembered for the boredom of the creator of hymns such as “Live Forever”, “Slide Away”, “Don’t Look Back in Anger” and the soundtrack of an entire generation, “Wonderwall”.

Amid the furor caused by the possible reunion of Oasis with the lineup that recorded the acclaimed album (What’s The Story) Morning Glory?, fans in Mexico have recalled Noel Gallagher’s controversial interview for Telehit.

On YouTube, the original video has seen a spike in views following reports from American and English media. During that chat, Claudio Rodriguez asked a final question that responded to genuine interest: “Do you see yourself doing something with Oasis again?”

True to form, Noel Gallagher did not hide the slightest bit of annoyance that the question caused him. “It’s not personal, but I resent being asked that question every time I give a damn interview because, you know, it’s over. And if (Oasis) ever came back I wouldn’t be announcing it on Mexican television.”

Although the interview lasted about 20 minutes, that fragment remained lodged in the collective memory and haunted Claudio Rodríguez, who was never able to dissociate himself from it.

In 2023, in an interview for Javier Paniagua’s YouTube channel, the communicator spoke about that iconic moment on Mexican television. “The last minute and a half of that interview I decided to ask him questions about Oasis,” recalled Rodríguez, who highlighted that his fans question him for not including Noel Gallagher on his list of “asshole” artists.

“Noel Gallagher didn’t act like a jerk, he has a very clear character when the camera is on and he makes you, as the interviewer, a participant and an accomplice in the mess he’s causing.”

The journalist explained that he anticipated that the guitarist would be upset, which is why he decided to ask two questions about Oasis at the end of the interview. According to Claudio Rodríguez, he does not regret his decision, because his boldness resulted in a television moment that went around the world and is remembered every time rumours about a possible reunion of the English group arise.
