OAS condemns Ecuador’s intrusion into the Mexican embassy

Mexico City. With 29 votes in favor, one vote against, one abstention, and two countries absent, the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) approved this Wednesday a condemnation of the intrusion carried out on Friday by the Ecuadorian police at the Embassy of Mexico in Quito.

The resolution, against which only Ecuador voted against, while El Salvador abstained, “strongly condemns the intrusion into the facilities of the Mexican Embassy in Ecuador and the acts of violence carried out against the integrity and dignity of diplomatic personnel in the mission.”

The continental body reaffirmed the obligation of all States to ensure respect for the privileges and immunities of diplomatic missions and the principle of inviolability of embassies.

The OAS urged Ecuador and Mexico to “initiate a dialogue and take immediate actions to resolve this serious matter in a constructive manner.”

In this sense, the OAS offered to mediate “to facilitate any effort that may be useful.”

In addition, the General Secretariat of the OAS was instructed to communicate the resolution to the Secretary General of the United Nations (UN), Antonio Guterres.
