Oakden is a small suburb of Adelaide, located in South Australia, north-east of the city center, at the foot of the city hills.
The area, which includes land formerly known as Gilles Plains and a small portion of South Australian Housing Trust property and Hillcrest land, has been renamed to Oakden in 1993, from the maiden name of the wife of Osmond Gilles, who was the first colonial treasurer of South Australia.
Its notable buildings include the Salvation Army Corps and Community Center; the Christadelphian Church runs Heritage College Adelaide and James Nash House, a recovery facility for the sick; various former Hillcrest hospital buildings, most of which have been converted for use by other tenants, including student housing, small businesses and nursing homes; the Oakden Fire Station; and the remainder of the Strathmont Centre, a South Australian Government institution for people with severe intellectual disability. The Makk and McLeay Nursing Home and Clements House, formerly known as Hillcrest Hospital, which closed in 2017, was also located in Oakden. The facility was part of the state government’s mental health care service for older people.[1]
Adelaide City play their home games at Adelaide City Park, located on the edge of Northgate.[2]
