The United Nations Undersecretary General, Rosemary DiCarlo, has considered the organization’s alliance with the League of Arab States “fundamental” to address the ongoing war in Syria, the search for a solution between Israel and Palestine or the situation in Yemen. and Libya, among other challenges.
The pandemic, along with ongoing conflicts and crises, have created a “dangerous combination” that has taken a heavy toll on the region, said the Secretary General of the Arab League, Aboul Gheit.
And, despite the efforts of both organizations and cooperation, “elevated tensions persist in the Persian Gulf region,” DiCarlo said before the Security Council in a virtual meeting.
Gheit has made reference to the imminent change of Administration in the United States, in the hope that the new one “rectifies the policies and procedures that are not useful and engages in a fruitful political process”, in reference to the conflict between Israel and Palestine.
This attitude, totally contrary to that adopted by the current president, Donald Trump, “would give the Palestinian people a renewed hope that the international community would stand by their side in their noble aspiration to achieve freedom and independence.”
In this sense, Gheit has criticized the “interference” that has destabilized the region, affecting critical shipping routes for global trade and perpetuating conflicts.
Specifically, he referred to Syria, where “five countries are interfering militarily”, a situation that “not only undermines the prospects for a political solution, but also has significant humanitarian repercussions.”
Nor has he forgotten to mention the imminent humanitarian catastrophe looming over Yemen, caused by years of fighting and aggravated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Finally, Gheit recalled that his work not only focuses on the Middle East, but also supports the transition in Sudan, the preparation for the elections in Somalia and the promotion of peace, security and stability in the Horn of Africa .
