On the morning of the 22nd, Actor Song Kang conducted a video interview related to Netflix’s new online video streaming service,’Sweet Home’ (screenplay Hong Sori, Kim Hyungmin, Park Sojeong/Director Lee Eungbok).

‘Sweet Home’, which was released on the 18th, is a drama about the bizarre and shocking story of a reclusive, lonely high school student, Hyeon-su, in an apartment moving after the loss of his family.

The webtoon of the same name is the original. As it was a popular work that received hot support at the same time as the serialization, more anticipation was focused on this dramatization. Since its release, it has been garnering great attention not only in Korea but also overseas as it has been ranked at the top of the Netflix ranking.

Actor Song Kang played the main character, Cha Hyun-soo. He drew attention from the boy’s anxious inner thoughts until death, as well as the external and internal changes that he experienced as the monstrosity progressed. Songgang is a newcomer who builds solid filmography and grows up to the drama’When the Devil Calls Your Name’,’If You Like It,”Sweet Home’.

Below is a question and answer with Songgang.

-The burden of 30 billion masterpieces.

▶When casting was decided, I couldn’t hear about the production cost, but after listening to that, the burden grew. I thought a lot about how I could lead Hyunsoo better. I think I had to worry a lot because I had to express the blackened Hyunsoo at the same time. I thought a lot about how I could express Hyunsoo of a more evil being, and how I could play Hyunsoo, a reclusive, solitary person. I put a lot of effort into expressing the most evil feelings inside.”

-There was also a modifier called’Netflix’s son’ as well as’Sweet Home,”If you like it’.

▶I was so grateful that I was listening to modifiers, and I thought I should try harder to get better modifiers in the future.

-He joined this drama with the recommendation of the director’Favorite Ringy’. What did you show at the audition?

▶When I go to the audition, I try to show Songgang as it is. At the audition for’Sweet Home’, the director gave me a wet tissue box (according to the scene in the play) and asked me to act as I thought it was a bank account. I did that, but I think you looked good. ‘Sweet Home’ was originally a webtoon I enjoyed watching, and I was happy with the news of casting because of its affection, but it was also a burden. I had to express all those characters, and I wondered how I could express my emotions or facial expressions when I encountered a monster. The burden was great, but I worked out well by communicating with the director.

-What do you think is your charm as an actor loved by the directors?

▶I think that what is important to an actor is attractive, so this is the process I am still looking for. I haven’t gotten an answer yet, but the directors seem to like me. I am so grateful. I am determined to work harder and try harder.

-After’Sweet Home’ was released, it was ranked 7th in the US and Netflix around the world did a good job.

▶I couldn’t feel it. I’m happy that the drama I’ve taken is at the top like this, but I really didn’t feel it. I am grateful that overseas fans like it. It’s absurd. There are a lot of comments on social media, but thank you very much.

-Hyunsu’s personality is a little different from the original, but if there is something you wanted to emphasize more while acting.

▶Because Hyun-su was a reclusive loner, he had to be small. While doing my head, I bent my shoulders and bent my neck, trying to look smaller. I tried to raise the most introverted figure inside of me, but now that I see it, I regret what it would have been like to be a little more introverted. I have grown a lot while filming dramas, so I feel a little regretful watching what I filmed at that time.

-Wasn’t it difficult to shoot CG?

▶ It was fun to do the chroma key acting that I only saw in the video. I had to act alone in the chroma key, so I tried to concentrate very much. When there is a chroma key scene, I thought a lot about how Hyunsoo and Hyeonsu’s breathing and feelings would be. After becoming a monster, the pupil was CG. He acted to make the tail of his mouth look more evil. I practiced the expression of tearing my mouth as much as possible.

-How was it after seeing the completed’Sweet Home’?

▶ It was a drama that I worked on for 8 months, so I had a great attachment. I had a lot of memories while watching the drama. I got a lot of attachment and I acted like that. I had that expression. It was fun and good.

-There is a scene where a knife is handed over to Doo-sik Han (played by Sang-ho Kim)

▶That’s my ad lib, but I did it at the rehearsal, but the seniors thought it was fun, so I did it. I saw Hyunsoo wearing socks, but it looked weird that they were the same color. Isn’t that a child who doesn’t care about the outside? I asked the director how about wearing socks in pairs, and after that, they wore them in pairs.

-If the situation in the play is real.

▶I think I will run away. But if there were children, I would fight to protect them. Doo-sik became the most dependent being. Whenever I went on an errand, I often looked at it with a loving glance. Such eyes became a dependence on Hyunsoo and myself.

-Is there a favorite monster?

▶ The muscle monster was my favorite. I like sports and my special make-up muscles are so big. It was amazing to have a certain desire to grow so much.

-If you meet actor Lee Do-hyun and your breathing in another work.

▶Because Do-hyun is of her age, she communicated well and matched her acting well. If there was a relationship between being used and being used, in other works, I would like to work together to overcome the crisis. I want to be like a close friend. It seems like Haeyoung and Seonoh in Good Alarm will also be good.

-It was a completely different genre from’Like Alarm’, but which one suits you better.

▶I think Hyunsoo of’Sweet Home’ was a little better suited to me. That’s why the dark side seems to have touched you more. It seems like he was also well matched with Sun-oh… subtly more Hyunsu. (laugh)

-‘Sweet Home’ season 2 expectations are high. If you go to the military, you can’t participate in Season 2. What kind of picture would you like to see if Season 2 is produced?

▶We haven’t heard anything about Season 2 yet. I only heard that if the reaction was good, I would film it. The military must go because it is a defense duty. Now, I think I should do my best for the work a little more and then take on my duty. (If Season 2 is produced) I wondered how to use the desire to protect to protect people. Like the movie’Venom’. It seems that Hyun-su could be the subject of the experiment, and Sang-wook will be able to tell you about Hyun-soo, who has amnesia. As Hyunsoo’s ability has been developed, it seems that he may come out in a stronger form.

-Breathing with actors. The burden of having to stand out in multicasting.

▶ The atmosphere of the drama is dark, but the scene was friendly and praised each other a lot. Rather than trying to stand out, I thought to work hard on my character. I paid more attention to Hyunsoo’s righteousness and the feelings she wanted to protect and save the people of the green home.

-There are also unfortunate reactions to the work. Any personal regrets?

▶There is a god who resents his family in the car, and I think what it would have been like to be able to show a little more hurt while looking at that part. Because of that regret, I kept watching the scene. I thought about how to supplement it. I wondered what to do with the tone of dialogue. I thought of such a complement and wrote it in my diary.

-About the reaction that the synchro ratio with Hyunsoo is high.

▶ When I was reading the script, Hyeonsu’s feelings touched me. The dark side touched. I thought there were many similarities to me. I thought the syncro rate was above average. (laugh)

-In the process of adaptation, Hyunsoo changed. Wasn’t it regrettable that the setting of running errands or internal conflicts were omitted?

▶The biggest part of Hyunsu was when I was younger, because I was increasingly burned with righteousness from bullying, I thought that I should protect the residents, so I tried to express that part a lot. The adaptation was filmed with satisfaction, thinking that the drama has its own charm.

-There was also a comment saying’Where is such a handsome bullying?’

▶Thank you, the director said that you should kill (look) as much as possible. I put a lot of effort in line with that direction.

-Did you try to look less handsome?

▶ I did a lot of makeup on freckles, blood, and wounds.

-At the ending, it felt sturdy. Did you think of a contrasting visual and prepare your body?

▶I didn’t prepare like that. When I had my hair, I shrugged my shoulders, and after cutting my hair, I spread my shoulders. I did not prepare separately. I lost a lot of weight. It was 70kg when it first started, but dropped to 65kg. I didn’t think it was difficult. I didn’t feel a lot of physical hardship thinking about how to express my emotions.

-What is Hyeonsu’s desire? Why didn’t he get eaten by a monster?

▶As I faced the children and remembered Hyunsoo’s past, I had a desire (will) to live little by little. I think it has changed into a desire to live and live with the residents of the green home. It seems that he wanted to protect himself from the presence of Hyeonsu, a welcome.

-What kind of actor do you want to be? If there is a modifier you want to hear through’Sweet Home’?

▶ While filming’Sweet Home’, I felt a lot about emotions. I want to become an actor who expresses emotions more freely and in various ways. Song Hyun-soo in’Sweet Home’? (Laughter) Because it means that the character was well expressed… I always wrote’Song Hyun-soo’ in the script.

-The scene that remains in my memory.

▶There is a god where Jaeheon dies, and I filmed it alone on another day. So the director showed Jaeheon’s death on a monitor, and I acted while watching it, but just looking at the monitor was very sad. The scene was the most impressive.

-Are there any memorable lines among the lines of’Sweet Home’?

▶ There is a line saying that some monsters do not harm people. In that, I think Hyeonsu said that because he wanted to be assimilated with the green home residents. Looking at such a line, Hyunsoo felt sorry.

-What are some of Lee Eung-bok’s directions that remain in your memory?

▶I will trust you and you will believe me too, so I asked you to try it, but I was very impressed with the words. When I showed you what I prepared at the rehearsal at the scene, the director filmed it accordingly. If there was something missing, he gave me direction and left a lot to me.

-Looking back on Songgang’s growth, what was the biggest difference before and after the filming, what was learned?

▶It seems that the range of emotions has widened. I had such feelings when I was doing Seonoh, but when I expressed Hyunsoo, I thought a lot about the darkest and bottom of my emotions within me. The breadth of emotions grew. I also learned a lot of camera terms. I also learned a lot about lens size. (laugh)
