NYU Abu Dhabi to Host 2023 Student Energy Conference alongside COP 28

Abu Dhabi, September 11, 2020 – NYU Abu Dhabi will host the 2023 Student Energy Conference during the period from November 29 to December 1, on the sidelines of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP 28).

The Student Energy Conference is led by a group of NYU Abu Dhabi students and brings together 650 young people from 120 countries, to enhance cooperation efforts to reach innovative energy solutions.

The Student Energy Conference’s slogan reflects its vision of reimagining the future, as it aims to empower young minds to envision paths towards a sustainable and just energy future inspired by the Expo 2020 slogan “Connecting Minds, Creating the Future.”

Mira Al-Jallaf, President of the 2023 Conference, said: “We started with ten inspiring students from NYU Abu Dhabi in February 2022, collectively submitting a bid file to host the Student Energy Conference 2023, which is being held for the first time in the UAE, and after a few months, and with the combined efforts of the students, we were selected by The committee assigned us to prepare a program that highlights the importance and influence of youth in the energy sector.”

She added: “The Student Energy Conference coincides with COP 28, giving us a platform to reach a wider audience and achieve better impact and results. We are grateful and pleased for the support we have received from key local stakeholders in the UAE, including the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).” And the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure and Masdar, who contributed to enhancing our impact.”

For his part, His Excellency Engineer Sherif Al Olama, Undersecretary for Energy and Petroleum Affairs at the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, said: “Activating the role of youth in the energy sector is one of our priorities in setting the goals of energy and climate policy and achieving these goals, and since the UAE proudly hosts the Conference of the Parties, it aspires to To build a generation of young leaders in the field of energy and to enable them to undertake the radical change efforts necessary for a prosperous, sustainable and independent future in terms of energy sources and the environment. Under the slogan “Reimagining the Future”, the conference has a role in contributing significantly to these priorities because it provides young people with a valuable platform to learn, communicate and participate actively. In the field of sustainable energy and the transition to it, we are pleased to cooperate with NYU Abu Dhabi to assist the Student Energy Conference and support its work.”

The list of prominent speakers at the Student Energy Conference includes His Excellency Dr. Nawal Al Hosani, Permanent Representative of the UAE to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), His Excellency Luis Alfonso de Alba, Ambassador of Mexico to the UAE and Special Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations for the 2019 Climate Action Summit, and Michael LeBraic. Founder of Bloomberg Energy Project Finance Agency.

Their collective expertise contributes to insightful discussions on Student Energy Conference topics, including decarbonizing cities and industries, climate finance and the geopolitics of energy. The United Nations Youth Climate Change Conference 2023 has been approved as a strategic partner of the International Renewable Energy Commission and the United Nations Sustainable Energy for All Organization.

With more than 4,700 participants from 161 countries, the Student Energy Conference brings together a constellation of the world’s young entrepreneurs, researchers and policy makers, with a focus on equity and participation for young people from developing countries, including the Middle East, North Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa. Age between 18 – 30 years.

The Student Energy Conference aims to promote ideas and solutions through its unique program, as sessions will highlight career paths in the energy sector, present innovative entrepreneurial ideas, and communicate directly with potential employers and mentors in the energy industry.

The “Innovation Retreat” sessions are considered the most important events of the Student Energy Conference to focus on solutions, where all participants can present ideas or topics they would like to work on.

The Student Energy Conference team collaborates with key local partners to raise awareness of energy topics in the UAE, including the UAE Energy Strategy 2050 and Abu Dhabi Economic Vision 2030. The Student Energy Conference concludes with an official closing event in the COP 28 Green Zone on December 1.

The Student Energy Conference is held every two years in a different city around the world under the umbrella of Youth Energy, a global youth-led organization that works with a network of 50,000 young people from over 120 countries. With the conclusion of the Student Energy Conference, the organizing team will continue to coordinate intergenerational dialogues through a series of events. It is organized in conjunction with the COP28 conference, in preparation for submitting the conference’s proposals to decision-makers.

The Student Energy Conference coincides with NYU Abu Dhabi’s presidency of the University Climate Network, which includes a number of universities and academic institutions in the country, and organizes dialogues, public events, public policies, and youth participation in preparation for the Conference of the Parties and beyond.
