Hamas originally planned to launch a major cross-border attack on Israel in the fall of 2022, but postponed the invasion until October 7 last year in an attempt to enlist Iran and Hezbollah to join it, it was revealed on Saturday ( 12/10).
To persuade Hezbollah, Hamas leaders cited Israel’s “internal situation” which, according to the New York Times report, appears to refer to internal political turmoil to promote a judicial review of the government as the main reason why “they were forced to move towards a strategic battle”.
According to the New York Times, despite feeling that it had the support of Hezbollah and Iran, Hamas concluded that it might need to launch the attack alone before Israel could deploy a new air defense system.
The Palestinian organization is also said to have been motivated in part by its desire to disrupt the US-backed initiative to normalize relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia.
In fact, as reported by the Times of Israel, the publication in question adds that Hamas leaders tried to avoid major conflicts with Israel in the two years leading up to the October 7 attack to “keep the enemy convinced that Hamas in Gaza he wants calm.”
Still, the New York Times reports that Hamas leaders in Gaza had briefed the terror group’s then-leader, Ismail Haniya, on the “grand plan” – Hamas’s code name for attack plans.
