NEW YORK — Police are searching for a man who was seen on video yelling anti-gay slurs during an apparent subway attack.
The incident occurred on March 19 just before 2:30 p.m., police said. A 22-year-old man was on a northbound A line train approaching the 190th Street station in Washington Heights when another man walked up to him, sat down across from him and said, “I wish I had my spray. of pepper” before spitting on him, according to police.
The man made another pepper spray comment and spit again, causing the victim to get to his feet. The suspect then charged the victim, grabbing him by the hair before punching him multiple times in the face and head, police said.
The video showed the suspect ripping hair from the victim’s head, then using an anti-gay slur that he said he was “fed up with.”
The victim suffered cuts and bruises during the attack and was hospitalized but is expected to recover.
The NYPD Hate Crimes Task Force is investigating the incident as a hate crime. Anyone with information is asked to contact police or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (English), or for Spanish at 1-888-57-PISTA.
