NEW YORK — The NYPD tow truck driver who hit and killed a 7-year-old boy Thursday at a Brooklyn intersection has been arrested and charged with his death, authorities said.
NYPD Traffic Enforcement Officer Stephanie Sharp was charged with failure to yield to a pedestrian and failure to exercise due care following the Thursday morning incident that claimed the life of little Kamei Hughes, who was headed to school with his mother when he was hit in the crosswalk, according to police.
The incident occurred shortly before 8 a.m. on the corner of Myrtle Avenue y North Portland Avenue in Fort Greene, just above Fort Greene Park. Sharp, 54, was behind the wheel of the tow truck that was turning right on North Portland Avenuewhen Kamei was hit while riding a lime green scooter and trying to cross the street, police and witnesses said.
The child was pronounced dead at the scene.
“The mother screams hysterically, ‘They killed my baby, they killed my baby,'” witness Antoine Hayes said. “The mother had another baby in a stroller walking between my car and a Lexus. They were going in that direction. The tow truck driver hits the child. You hear the boom. She keeps going. Someone went to stop her.”
Sharp was alerted by witnesses a block away from the accident and remained there while police conducted their investigation.
An investigation into the deadly accident is underway. Detectives are looking at surveillance video to see how fast the driver was going, if she had a green light and if she was talking on the phone or otherwise distracted.
