The suspect wore a Halloween mask over his face mask (the ones usually seen in these COVID times) during the attack, which occurred shortly after 10 p.m. It was unclear what triggered it.
Police say the suspect ran into the 59th Street / Columbus Circle subway station after the attack. The victim was taken to a hospital in stable condition.
Authorities did not immediately provide details about the ax-related injury.
