NEW YORK – Police in New York on Saturday called for help from the public in locating a man wanted for shouting anti-Asian slurs at a 44-year-old woman and her three children, spitting on him before snatching him away his cell phone in a subway train.
Police are calling the incident on Tuesday a hate crime.
Authorities described the suspect as a dark-skinned man, aged 50 to 55, measuring around 1.8 meters and weighing around 68 kilograms. When he was last seen, he was wearing a dark camouflage sweater, black sweatpants, and black sandals. Police said he was wearing a black sock on his left foot and a white sock on his right foot.
The woman and her three children were passengers on a train set headed for Times Square on Tuesday afternoon. A man shouted anti-Asian slurs at them. He spat twice in the mother’s direction before dropping his cell phone, police said. The man then threw the device through the back door of the car before fleeing on West 41st Street, authorities said.
The woman was taken to a hospital for observation, they added.
Anyone with information about this assault is urged to call New York Police.
The attack is another example of the surge in anti-Asian racism in the United States. In New York, near Times Square, a 65-year-old Filipino American was violently assaulted on her way to a church. A man on parole after being convicted of murdering his mother two decades ago has been charged with assault and attempted assault in a hate crime.
