Nymburk defeats Děčín for second time, secures fourth place in Men’s Basketball Cooperative League

Děčín lost for the second time in a row and finished fourth behind their North Bohemian rival from Ústí nad Labem by one win. Sunny in Nymburk, this year’s unbeaten streak and five-match league winning streak ended.

Ondřej Sehnal contributed 29 points to Nymburk’s win. The Central Bohemians lost a thirteen-point lead in the third quarter and even lost by four, but they managed the end better. Top scorer Ty Nichols led the visitors with 22 points.

“We didn’t play our best game today, which makes the win all the more valuable. We were able to handle a match where we didn’t do well and where we struggled with frustration and emotions. We haven’t been able to do that very well this season,” stated Nymburk coach Francesco Tambelini. “Finishing the regular season in first place is not something to celebrate now, but it is a certain achievement that we have achieved together that we can cherish and appreciate,” he added.

In Děčín, the best scorer was local Matěj Svoboda with 23 points and his teammate Anthony Walton was the most useful player with 16 points and eight rebounds and assists, but it was still not enough for Opava. The guests didn’t even miss 16 dropped sixes, because the opponent didn’t hit thirteen times. The offensive rebounding was decisive, during which the visitors created 23 second chances to finish and extracted 22 points against the home team’s six.

“We struggled with sixes. It’s a shame, because we could have created a lead,” Opava coach Petr Czudek pointed out the success rate of only 57 percent (22/38) when shooting from the free throw line. “Twenty-three offensive rebounds is a decent number, though. Compared to the previous two matches, there was fighting spirit and great energy. We worked well in defense,” stated Czudek.

With five wins in a row, Pardubice now has the longest current streak of success, although today they beat their Prague opponent from USK only after extra time 79:75, after losing a double-digit lead in the second half. After the match against each other, Prague moved up to the sixth team in the table, and Kolín also has an even balance of 11-11 with them after a 74:83 defeat in Ostrava. Brno stayed ahead of the trio of teams completing the newly formed superstructure group A1 after an 83:65 win over the last Slavia.

In group A2, Ostravana will fight for the remaining two places in the preliminary round of the play-off from the first row. They moved ahead of the newcomer from Písek, who, despite Martin Svoboda’s 31 points and 10 rebounds, suffered his eighth league defeat in a row in the home game against Olomouc (83:93). Vojtěch Sýkora’s 14 points and 15 rebounds did not help either, Amin Adamu (24) and Dupree McBrayer (22) performed twenty-point performances in the opponent’s jersey.

South Czechs now have a lead of only one victory over Hanáky. Slavia lost for the fourteenth time in a row, with the loss of four wins, they are the biggest contender for participating in the play-off.
