NYC’s plastic bag ban goes into effect

Today is the first day that stores are prohibited from handing out plastic bags.

This means that supermarkets, warehouses, delis and other establishments will not be able to distribute single-use bags.

If you don’t bring your own reusable bag, which you can find in some stores and online, you will have to pay five cents for a paper bag.

This does not apply to SNAP or WIC beneficiaries.

But you will still be able to see plastic bags in stores.

This is because they have a grace period of one month to exhaust their stock of bags.
