Nyck de Vries not sure if Mercedes draws hamper Formula 1’s chances

Nyck de Vries has said he is unsure whether his status as a Mercedes reserve driver has barred him from a seat in Formula 1.

The Dutchman had been linked with seats in Williams and Alfa Romeo for 2022, but the move to Formula 1 ultimately did not materialize for the talented 26-year-old.

His pedigree would suggest that his talent is worth a seat, as he was a 2019 Formula 2 champion and became the first official Formula E world champion earlier this year.

He currently combines Formula E with endurance racing, and was recently fastest in his IndyCar test while evaluating his options for driving in 2022.

Having driven and tested in multiple categories, the Mercedes-EQ Formula E driver will defend his world title in the all-electric series in 2022, and he will likely continue to combine that with his endurance racing in LMP2.

He keeps an open mind about what will happen in the future beyond next year and insisted that he remains “realistic” about his prospects in other series.

De Vried added that he is aware that things can change in motorsports and that opportunities may open up for him, but he is happy with how his career has gone so far.

“I am incredibly grateful for all that I can do at this time,” he said. “I am really enjoying the combination of Formula E and endurance racing right now.

“I just don’t know what will happen in the future. I am a very realistic person and I focus on the present. I also had the experience: things change very fast sometimes. That is why I am looking forward to the new season.

“Then we will compete with Mercedes to defend the title. And I’m sure: if I keep giving my best, there will be new opportunities. Where, I don’t know. Time will tell.”
