NEW YORK – After electric scooters were launched in the vast majority of cities across the country last year but New York was shut out for nearly a year, New Yorkers will now be able to enjoy them starting in the spring, a Department of Transportation memo issued Friday.
The New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) issued a request on Friday to conduct an alleged shared electric skateboard pilot program in Manhattan beginning in 2021.
According to the Business Insider, Companies like Lyft, Bird, Lime, Spin and Voi have shown interest in participating in this program that would be carried out in the five boroughs of the city.
According to the guide, DOT seeks to achieve these goals with the skateboard pilot program:
- Improve Mobility: Expand convenient, affordable, and sustainable mobility options, especially for those residents living in communities outside of NYCDOT.
- Improve Safety – Make sure the pilot program is safe for bicyclists, pedestrians, and other street users.
- Be accessible: make sure the program doesn’t get in the way of sidewalks
- Equitable Access: Expanding mobility options for low-income New Yorkers and communities underserved by public transportation.
After applying to the program however, city officials will review proposals from interested companies in order to narrow down the list and select the right company for the program.
